DENVER (KDVR) — A fire ignited at the former Great Western Sugar Factory in Longmont overnight Saturday into Sunday.

According to Mountain View Fire Rescue, the first reports were of flames inside the complex. Firefighters arrived on scene and found fire concentrated around wood materials stored in the machine shed for years.

A tower truck was used to get water on the flames, but due to the hazardous condition of the building, crews were unable to enter the building.

Because of these safety issues, the fire was allowed to burn itself out. Residents could see smoke throughout the day on Sunday, and nearby neighbors should keep their windows closed. Mountain View Fire Rescue and Longmont Fire Rescue will be checking the scene all day to ensure the blaze remains under control.
