The rumors started on NW 13th Street before the 2024 high school softball season about a certain pitcher stepping foot onto GHS campus.

Head coach Chris Chronister heard about the potential of an incoming freshman, but he knows at this point in his career to hold until he sees himself.

Immediately, he knew of the talent Leanna Bourdage possessed.

Few could guess what the freshman would accomplish in her first season.

First in Class 5A in strikeouts, wins and ERA. Top 12 in home runs and runs. A trip to the state semifinals and within one run of a state championship, the school's first since 2016.

Now, she's the Sun's All-Gainesville Area Big School Softball Player of the Year.

She has interest from multiple colleges, including Tim Walton and UF, and that only expects to increase as Bourdage's play improves over the next three years.

Below is the full Big School Softball team, consisting of 22 athletes from eight local schools.

Congrats to all, and be on the lookout in the coming days and weeks for the rest of the spring 2024 All-Area teams !

Chronister was an easy choice for this honor. Not only did he take the 'Canes to the state championship game, but he led GHS on a remarkable turnaround. The Hurricanes went from a seven-win team to 20-plus wins, and with Braylin Cook and Leanna Bourdage back for next season, watch out for more hurricane warnings.
