NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A multi-state salmonella outbreak has been traced back to bearded dragons, with at least 15 people falling ill across nine states, including New York, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Friday, a total of 15 people have become ill, according to the CDC , which reported four hospitalizations and no deaths. The majority of those affected were children under the age of five.

In New York, four people have been affected by the outbreak. The other states reporting cases include California, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

The CDC found that bearded dragons can carry salmonella germs in their droppings, even if they appear healthy and clean. These germs can easily spread to the reptiles' bodies and their surroundings. “You can get sick from touching your bearded dragon or anything in its environment and then touching your mouth or food and swallowing salmonella germs,” a CDC statement read.

Most infected with salmonella experience symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms typically begin six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria.

While most people recover within four to seven days without the need for treatment, some—especially young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems—may suffer more severe illnesses that require medical attention.

To prevent the spread of salmonella, the CDC advised thorough handwashing with soap and water after handling bearded dragons or their habitats. The agency warned against kissing or snuggling with bearded dragons, as this can transfer salmonella germs to the mouth, increasing the risk of illness.

It also recommended avoiding eating or drinking around the reptiles and keeping them away from areas where young children eat or play.

“Bearded dragons are not recommended for families with children younger than five years old, adults 65 years of age and older, or people with weakened immune systems,” the CDC stated.
