South Dakota’s top prospect commits to Nebraska
The top prospect in the state of South Dakota has committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Shawn Hammerbeck is a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive lineman for Winner High School in Winner, SD. Hammerbeck selected the Husker over Kansas State, Minnesota, and Texas Tech. Reports have Nebraska looking at the offensive lineman as a tackle, although he has been identified as a possible defensive lineman. Nebraska first offered the recruit in the spring and hosted him on an official visit in April. He would then return in June on an official visit before committing to the Cornhuskers on July 3rd. On Monday, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) hosted National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy for a roundtable discussion on electric vehicles (EVs), their safety risks, and their impact on our infrastructure. Following the discussion, participants viewed a crash test demonstration at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF) Outdoor Test Site. Monday’s test builds on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s groundbreaking research on the safety implications of EVs on America’s roadways. Collaboration between academic institutions, government agencies, and industry partners is an important first step in addressing these challenges.

Body recovered from Platte River confirmed to be teen who went missing near Fremont

Rain postpones United Way of Kearney’s fireworks show until Thursday night
KEARNEY, Neb. — One of Kearney’s premier fireworks shows will happen on Thursday night after a rain postponement. Heavy rain forced the United Way of the Kearney Area to end its Freedom Fest early on Wednesday night. In a Facebook video, executive director Savannah Lyon said the Axtell Fire Department will start the fireworks show at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Viaero Center. There won’t be any vendors on site and, as of Thursday morning, the group didn’t have a plan for if it would charge for parking or not.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - After an incredible amount of rain earlier this week, the year of 2024 has now reached an official 22.59″ of precipitation in Omaha, as of June 3rd. This is more than the entire year of 2022 (22.55″) and closing in on the total for 2023 (24.98″). In fact, on Tuesday, July 2nd the area totaled 2.08″, breaking the daily precipitation record of 1.28″ set back in 1958.

In a tragic incident on July 1, a neighborhood in Nebraska experienced a brutal shooting that left four children and three adults wounded.
