As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Sacramento Metro Fire is reminding residents to prioritize safety while enjoying water-related activities. Whether you're planning a pool party or a leisurely float down the American River, following these essential safety tips can help ensure a fun and incident-free holiday weekend.

    Pool Safety Tips:

    1. Supervise Like a Lifeguard: Keep a vigilant eye on swimmers, especially children. Designate a responsible adult to serve as the designated "water watcher" to prevent accidents.
    2. Barrier Brigade: Ensure that your pool is surrounded by a secure fence with a locked gate to prevent unsupervised access, particularly for young children and pets.
    3. Life Jacket Up: Encourage non-swimmers and young children to wear properly fitted life jackets while in or around the pool. Life jackets provide an added layer of safety, especially in emergencies.
    4. CPR is Cool: Equip yourself with life-saving skills by learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Being prepared to respond in emergencies can make a significant difference in outcomes.
    5. Walk, Don’t Run: Emphasize the importance of walking on pool decks to prevent slips, trips, and falls. Slow and steady movement can help avoid accidents and injuries.

    American River Safety Tips:

    1. Life Jacket Legends: Always wear a properly fitting life jacket while enjoying activities on the American River. Strong currents and unpredictable conditions require constant vigilance.
    2. Stay Sober, Stay Safe: Refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs before or during water activities. Impaired judgment can increase the risk of accidents and drownings.
    3. River Intel: Stay informed about current river conditions and potential hazards before venturing into the water. Check weather forecasts and river flow advisories to avoid surprises.
    4. Buddy System: Swim with a buddy or in groups to enhance safety and provide mutual support in case of emergencies. Avoid swimming alone, especially in unfamiliar or hazardous waters.
    5. No Pool Floats on the River: Use only heavy-duty rafts designed for river use. Inflatable pool floats are not suitable for navigating the American River and can pose significant safety risks.
