The offseason Hard Knocks with the New York Giants have allowed fans a new level of understanding about how NFL teams are built. It's an unprecedented amount of information and detail shared with the external public, and it brings interesting perspectives about how they operate.

In the season finale, the Giants allowed the audience to view their color-coding system. It's just a visual representation of specific qualities or issues each player has.

We don't know exactly what each color means, but the X profile Doug_Analytics came out with a reasonable scenario based on the players tagged.

    • Blue: all-around good leader, teammate, person
    • Red: medical concerns
    • Purple: character concerns
    • Pink: undersized/measurement concern
    • Gray: multiple positions

    Packers plan

Sure, we don't know if the Green Bay Packers agreed with every evaluation from the New York Giants. But Hard Knocks showed that the Giants had three players who ended up getting drafted by the Packers as gray tags, meaning they have positional versatility.

    First-round offensive lineman Jorgan Mordan (tackle/guard) , second-round defensive back Javon Bullard (safety/cornerback) , and fifth-round offensive lineman Jacob Monk (center/guard) .

That versatility was one of the motivating factors for the Packers to select Morgan ahead of what he was expected to be taken. General manager Brian Gutekunst mentioned he could play four positions across the line — both tackles and guards spots.

"There's only so many big guys usually in each draft," Gutekunst said at the time. "And you realize that they're going to go early and they're going to go quick and if you don't get one, you might be out of luck."

For the secondary, Guteunst believes in positional interchangeability, especially for safeties and nickel corners. That made Bullard an obvious selection.

"It really helps your defense to be multiple and flexible, so teams can't get a bead on what you're doing," Gutekunst said. "In a perfect world, quite frankly, between the two safeties and the nickel, those three guys almost need to be interchangeable completely."

    Red tag

The other Packers player tagged by the Giants scouting department was fifth-round safety Kitan Oladapo, but that wasn't a good one. He received a red tag, which presumably means medical concerns.

It's not clear if it's any long-term issue or just something happening at the moment, though. Oladapo started training camp on the non-football injury list because of a toe injury, but he was activated on Tuesday and started practicing.

The Packers finished their 2024 class with 11 total draft picks — nobody has had more draft selection in the last three years combined than Green Bay, and that's a smart way to overcome paying a big salary to a high-priced quarterback like Jordan Love.
