GRIMES, Iowa- Volunteers at a local animal shelter in Grimes are turning to the community for help after finding an abandoned dog.

Leo is one-and-a-half-years old and was alone and hurt, seeking shelter in a garage in Bondurant before Kristin Riding Coffman, a volunteer at Rescue Rehab Rehome , rescued him.

“It makes me really sad. When I first saw him, I teared up, because he doesn’t deserve this,” said Riding Coffman.

Leo is severely malnourished and the vet says his rear left leg appears to have been broken, without treatment, for weeks. On Monday, his leg will be amputated and his road to recover will begin.

“It depends on where they go in and how much damage it is. Basically he’ll be going to the vet and they’ll determine what he’ll need done. It can run anywhere between 5 to 10,000 dollars depending on the vet,” said Beth Bacon, a volunteer at Rescue Rehab Rehome.

The shelter asked for the community to help Leo by providing donations. The money will go towards his procedure and other medical care he may need. As of Sunday evening, they raised over $2,000.

And while he’s been through a lot, Leo is persevering.

“He just wants love. I mean, he shouldn’t trust anybody, but he does,” said Riding Coffman.

After Leo has fully recovered he will be up for adoption at their shelter.
