Flintstone House to Open to Public as Stoneage Omakase, a High End Sushi Pop-Up
Well, I didn't see this one coming! The quirky so-called Flintstone House down on I-280 in Hillsborough is going to open to the public for the first time this month as a high-end omakase pop-up with a Michelin-credentialed chef. Amusingly, it's called Stoneage Omakase, and as the Chronicle reports, it...
After two shake-ups, Alisal Union School District is searching for an after-school contractor for music and arts programs.
Alisal Union School District is getting ready for the upcoming 2024-25 school year, which begins Aug. 7. What might be missing: after-school programs in the arts. AUSD recently terminated contracts with two extracurricular providers. On May 30, AUSD announced it terminated its contract with Alisal Community Arts Network, known as AlisalCAN, a nonprofit that taught four programs in the district, after the group’s executive director, Joshua Alfaro, was arrested on charges of child molestation. Alfaro entered a plea of not guilty; his preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin July 10.
Bay Area group achieves impressive cake-baking (and donating) milestone
Since signing up in 2011 as a volunteer baker for Cake4Kids, Robin Wolfgram has baked more than 200 cakes. “I think the exact number might be 204,” Wolfgram said. As impressive as that number is, though, it is just a small percentage – 0.68% to be exact – of all the cakes Cake4Kids volunteers have baked for Bay Area children since Libby Gruender founded the organization in Sunnyvale in 2010.
6 new Palo Alto restaurants 😋
Steak, sushi, dumplings and more: The latest in Palo Alto’s food scene. Suns out, (steamed pork) buns out. This week, I drove all around Palo Alto in search of new restaurants and discovered some pretty tasting findings: A Sausalito-based Brazilian steakhouse and a Sunnyvale-founded fried chicken franchise will be opening along El Camino, a dumpling restaurant (serving some insanely delicious xiao long bao) opened in downtown and more new spots.
Detroit-Style Pizzas and Cocktails Make a Big Splash on the Embarcadero
Dianne de Guzman is a deputy editor at Eater SF writing about Bay Area restaurant and bar trends, upcoming openings, and pop-ups. Brothers Jesse and Joshua Jacobs of Joyride Pizza are all-in on Detroit-style pies, and now they’re launching their biggest venture yet — the siblings will open the flagship location of their burgeoning pie empire at Pier 1 next to the Ferry Building, starting Thursday, July 4.
Pet of the Week: Sanford
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA’s Pet of the Week is Sanford. Sanford is an 11-month-old neutered lab mix who tips the scales at a whopping 82 pounds! He’s still a puppy at heart trying to figure out this crazy world. Sanford is on the hunt for a loving and patient family to show him the ropes of being a well-adjusted canine. Obedience class is in his future. He would like it very much if you didn’t hold that against him! He’s a total sweetheart once you’re in his inner circle. He’s a curious pup that that lives for adventure, especially if it involves sniffing every leaf and watching every passerby on his walks.
Califuegos, Historical Walks, Handmade Pacifica
Califuegos, the Coastside-based So-Cal surf, Latin, alt-country, rock, alternative Mexi-Americana band (in other words – labels don’t apply!) born in the haze of wildfires in 2010 will celebrate the release of their third album in a free party at OPL. Those lucky enough to get in will have an opportunity to purchase a pre-release copy of “Like it Used to Be.” Written between 2020-2023, “Like it Used to Be” The new ablum includes nine tracks written between 2020 and 2023 that were recorded last summer at Brothers Chinese Recording in Oakland California.
Circus in the Sun: Bella’s outdoors show is a ‘WOW!’
After all the ups and downs my life has had lately, I needed the relief of something familiar. I now live in an unheated room in the Sunset, so even sunny days for the rest of SF mean the marine layer will linger at my place up in the hills. As such, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to head down to Yerba Buena Gardens , sit in the sun, and watch clowns be silly for a crowd of eager kids. (And seeing Boots Riley sit in the audience sure didn’t hurt.)

Under the Stars: Fake Fruit goes clown show, Fresh & Onlys return…
It’s Under The Stars babe….. Where we are always stoked to see local digs pop up in new visuals from local artists who treasure these Bay Area spots just as much as we do. For example, Fake Fruit, the Oakland-based post-punk outfit, that signed to Carpark Records, just released their second single from the album Mucho Mistrust, arriving in August.
