Olympic swimmer joins pool of City Council candidates
Anne Cribbs, an Olympic swimmer and longtime champion of Bay Area sports, is now setting her sights on her next big competition: the Palo Alto City Council. Cribbs, who currently serves on Palo Alto’s Parks and Recreation Commission, is well known for both her athletic accomplishments and her passionate advocacy for local sports. In 1959, when she was just 14, she took gold for breastroke in 200 meters in the Pan American Games. The following year, she was part of the U.S. women’s swim team that won the gold medal for the 400-meter medley relay in the Olympic Games in Rome.
Reigning National Player of the Year NiJaree Canady reveals transfer destination
College softball’s reigning National Player of the Year NiJaree Canady announced where she will play next season. After leading Stanford to the Women’s College World Series, Canady opted to enter the transfer portal. She announced on social media that she will continue her playing career with the Texas Tech Lady Raiders softball team. The school recently hired Gerry Glasco away from Louisiana, where he guided the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 300-88 record over seven seasons. CHARLOTTE: The Stanford football program that has joined the ACC is not the same Cardinal program that was one of the best in the PAC-12 last decade. From 2010-18 they won 94 games and three conference titles. But 2019 started a downturn from which they have not recovered. The Cardinal has but 17 wins over the past five seasons. Coach Troy Taylor, a former NFL quarterback, is going into his second season and has 18 starters back. He runs the offense so he knows that’s on him, and he expects to average more than the 21 points per game of last season. But he’s also got to fix a defense that yielded 37 points per game.
