HAMPTON — A woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly firing a gun in an apartment building Friday morning, where the bullet went through her neighbor's front door.

Erin McCarthy, 38, of Hampton, was charged with reckless conduct, criminal threatening with a deadly weapon and domestic violence criminal threatening with a deadly weapon.

Hampton Police Chief Alex Reno said police were called to Old English Apartments on Winnacunnet Road at 7:43 a.m. after receiving a call reporting a firearm had just been shot.

It was the second time in four hours that police responded to the apartment building at 463 Winnacunnet Road.

The same caller called the police at 3:15 a.m. and reported that her neighbor, McCarthy, was banging on his door and yelling loudly.

"Officers responded, and McCarthy refused to come to the door," Reno stated in a press release. "After investigating the call, officers warned McCarthy that if they had to return to the location for similar complaints that she would be charged with disorderly conduct."

Police were called to the apartment building again after the same neighbor reported that a gunshot had pierced through their front door. The neighbor and his girlfriend were unharmed, and police said the bullet was found on their kitchen floor.

Reno said police identified the suspect as McCarthy and evacuated the building while officers attempted to get her to come to the door. At 8:03 a.m., McCarthy exited her apartment holding a loaded 9mm pistol.

"Officers ordered her to drop the pistol and submit to arrest," stated Reno. "McCarthy complied and was taken into custody without further incident."

Police said the investigation revealed that McCarthy and her neighbor had previously been in a relationship.

Reno said the case remains under investigation, and further charges may be forthcoming.

McCarthy was taken into custody and is being held without bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, July 21, at Hampton District Court. It was not immediately known if McCarthy has an attorney.
