On July 22, San Bernardino Animal Services were called to assist San Bernardino Police Department, who came across 56 turkeys and 47 geese housed in an abandoned building on Highland Avenue suspected of stealing power from a neighboring property.

Animal Control staff were able to corral the birds and transfer them to the animal shelter on Chandler Place for the required two week impound to allow the owner to claim the birds.

While staff are used to dogs and cats, an occasional potbellied pig, goats, snakes, spiders, and even two alligators last year, handling 103 turkeys and geese required special care and handling due to their sheer numbers and daily temperatures soaring well past 100 degrees.

When the impound period passed, the birds all found a home with the Duck Sanctuary in Lake Elsinore.
