HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A fire that was believed to be started by smoldering fireworks on Saturday has displaced six people in Holland.

Just before 11 p.m., fire crews with the Holland Department of Public Safety were sent to E. 20th Street near Hazel Avenue for a fire.

Responding crews learned that there was an active fire in the garage of the two-family home. It had spread to the attic. The fire was quickly extinguished.

    Both homes were evacuated.

The department of public safety said that one person who was inside the duplex was hurt in the fire. They were treated at the scene.

A firefighter was hurt when a section of the ceiling collapsed on them and two other people. The department of public safety said they were treated at the hospital and released.

Investigators have learned that the fire was accidental and most likely started due to smoldering fireworks that were next to the home. The wind helped the fire to ignite and spread.

One of the homes in the duplex is a total loss, the department of public safety said.

“This fire serves as a reminder to safely dispose of fireworks and other pyrotechnic materials that are used around the 4th of July and other holidays. These should be placed in a metal container or bucket of water, away from structures, to cool prior to disposal,” the department of public safety said in a release.

    The fire remains under investigation.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly listed the location of the home. We regret the error which has been corrected.
