East Idaho lost a precious soul on the morning of July 27 when 20-year-old Abigail Thornley succumbed to injuries suffered during a car accident on Highway 89 just west of Montpelier.

The young Blackfoot woman's unexpected and tragic passing sent shockwaves throughout the community, with numerous individuals and businesses stepping up to offer both financial and emotional support for her family members and friends trying to find meaning and comfort from a life that ended far too soon.

In the wake of Abigail's death, one group is trying to make a difference.

The Idaho Falls Trail Runners, also known as IFTR, have joined with community leaders to create a one-of-a-kind event inspired by Abigail's passing to offer support to all those who have lost a loved one, particularly for those who have lost a child in early adulthood.

“Circles of Love” is a free run/walk memorial event and fundraiser to be held in September along the paved 1.8 mile walking path around the lake at Jensen Grove Park in Blackfoot.

Every lap around the lake symbolizes love and support for those who are grieving and serves as a remembrance of those who have passed on too soon.

Organizing the event is IFTR founder and Ammon City Councilman Jeff Fullmer.

“I had several people reach out to me about doing something,” Fullmer said. “I love when things happen from a natural and genuine creative place. It's what brings life into my life. I feel like we could help bring life and love to a family and community though something fairly simple but impactful.”

Fullmer enlisted the aid of a few key individuals and within hours, the IFTR's group chat was bursting with ideas and offers to help carry out what ultimately resulted in the creation of the Circles of Love Run/Walk.

The free event is scheduled to begin on Friday, Sept. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. and will continue throughout the night, finishing at 3 p.m. the next day, culminating in 20 total hours of solidarity and support for the 20 years of life in which the Thornley family and the East Idaho community were graced with Abigail’s sweet spirit.

Donations received will fund the event, with all additional proceeds donated to the Blackfoot High School drama department, where Abigail spent much of her energy and passion.

As part of the event, a memorial tree will be planted in the park in Abigail’s name, with special permission for the project given by the Blackfoot City Parks Department.

Nourishment and snacks will be provided for participants and all are welcome to participate for as long or as short as they wish, though it is requested that all participants sign up in advance to assist with the planning logistics.
