The Indianapolis Colts used the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft on QB Anthony Richardson.

Unfortunately, he spent the majority of the season watching on the sideline due to his suffering a shoulder injury after just his fourth NFL game.

And to make it worse, Richardson had to watch on as fellow rookie QB CJ Stroud and AFC South rivals the Houston Texans ended the Colt's season during their Week 18 loss. Stroud went on to win a playoff game as a rookie as well as being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. According to Brett Kollmann of Bootleg Football, Richardson's instant reaction to Stroud winning this award will have Colts fans ready to run through a brick wall.

I was talking to his (Anthony Richardson) trainers, and they were rehabbing him during his recovery for surgery last year. And CJ Stroud won rookie of the year, and Ants first words were "Damn, I guess I have to win MVP next year."

You can find the episode where this quote comes from below.

For Richardson, how he handled this adversity mentally is almost as important as his physical recovery from his shoulder injury. And to hear this type of motivation and fire coming from Richardson after seeing a young QB who he will directly be competing with for the foreseeable future tells you how ready the Colts QB is to be back under center for his sophomore season.

I think it's also important to say how high of heights Richardson chose to reach for in that moment. He could simply be focused on winning Comeback Player of the Year this season, an award he will certainly be one of the favorites to win if he is able to put up a healthy and successful season. Instead, he chose to say an award that would, without question, one-up Stroud's impressive Offensive Rookie of the Year season in 2023 by winning the NFL's Most Valuable Player award.

If Richardson was able to accomplish this feat, he'd be just the eighth NFL player to win the MVP during their second NFL season. And he would be just the fifth QB to do so, joining an elite list with two Hall of Famers and two players on their way to earning their gold jackets.
