Surveillance video shows deadly ambush and shooting outside near east side gas station

INDIANAPOLIS — One man is dead following a shooting outside a gas station on Indy’s near east side.

Just after 4:30 in the morning, a man was ambushed and shot outside at the Marathon gas station at the corner of 10th and Rural.

The victim died after being rushed to the hospital.

The shooting was captured on video.

The victim was standing and talking with three other people when a fifth man walked up from the adjacent alley and shot the victim, seemingly unprovoked, at close range.

Surveillance video from the business showed the hooded gunman target the victim specifically before running away.

“We want to ask the community to come forward with any information to help the detectives in any way possible for the victim’s family,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thomson.

Because there was no argument or confrontation outside the business before the killing, police don’t yet know what motivated the murder.

Of course, the area around 10th and Rural is historically one of Indy’s high crime neighborhoods. That fact is not lost on IMPD.

“IMPD has been proactively self-dispatching into that area throughout the day, showing a police presence and trying to deter criminal activity,” said Thompson.

“It’s very disappointing as always when life is lost,” said Pastor Fredick Boyd Jr.

Faith leaders in the area, like Pastor Boyd, meet every week at Zion Unity Baptist Church to discuss ways to prevent violence on the near east side.

Boyd said that goal requires greater community involvement.

“To take care of darkness you’ve got to have light. Light dispels darkness, so come join us,” said Boyd. “We want to stop the violence on the near east side and it can be done.”

Before this incident, the most recent homicide at the Marathon gas station took place in uly 2021.

That crime was solved and a man was convicted of murder thanks in part to surveillance video.

While some neighbors describe the business as a nuisance, community leaders insist the owners have been receptive to their concerns about litter, loitering and graffiti.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case overnight.
