Indianapolis Colts starting slot receiver Josh Downs suffered an apparent injury during Wednesday's practice and had to be helped off the field.

During a drill in a 7-on-7 period, Downs caught a short pass and was taken to the ground on a tackle by safety Nick Cross. The second-year receiver came up limping and had to be helped off the field without putting much weight on his left leg.

Multiple reports stated head coach Shane Steichen was not happy that Cross took Downs to the ground during a 7-on-7 drill.

The severity of the injury is unknown, but Steichen is expected to meet with the media following practice so there should be somewhat of an update then.

Downs, a third-round pick in 2023, had a promising rookie season that resulted in 68 receptions for 771 yards and two touchdowns.

The North Carolina product is expected to be the starting slot receiver with Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell working on the outside.

Meanwhile, Cross is in the middle of a position battle for the starting free safety role.

The Colts are preparing for their preseason opener against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Aug. 11.
