Every dog looks different as a puppy than they do as an adult, but pooches with the fading color gene go through a slightly more dramatic metamorphosis. One pet owner on social media has been sharing some incredible before and after footage of her adorable, color-changing doodle! This sweet pup’s coat transformed completely as she grew older. She’s still just as cute as ever, though!

In a video, the dog owner shared a clip of her brand new puppy before the color fading gene became apparent. At this point, the little pooch was a deep, chocolate brown. Fast forward to the present, and the dog’s fur has lightened significantly. These days, she’s more of a pale grey.

“When your doodle has the color fading gene,” read the text over the footage.

Another video featured the opposite transition, beginning with a current picture of the pooch and ending with a puppy photo. As in the first video, the difference was truly striking!

According to Doodle Doods , the “color fading gene” is something these dogs get from the poodle side of their heritage. There are many poodles who begin their life with one shade of fur, only for that color to completely change when they grow up. This phenomenon is also common in some poodle mixes, although it doesn’t occur quite as frequently.

Color fading in dogs doesn’t come down to one specific gene, but a variety of different factors. There’s no accurate way to tell if a puppy’s coat will end up changing color in the future or not. However, it’s most likely to happen around two years of age or sooner. So, if you have an older doodle, their coat color is probably here to stay!

Poodles and poodle mixes aren’t the only pups who experience color changes in their fur. One pooch with vitiligo ended up going from black to white over a period of time, to his owner’s great surprise!

Of course, it doesn’t really matter what color a dog’s coat is. We love them all just the same!
