    Meet the nominees for the Press-Citizen's Athletes of the Week, July 8-14

    Regional softball and baseball ramped up in the Iowa City area last week. Some teams advanced one step closer to their goal of reaching the state tournament while others had their season cut short.

    Regina Catholic (20-13), Iowa City High (14-23) and Iowa City West (3-32) saw their seasons end, while Regina baseball (14-19) fell short in the regional quarterfinals.

    Regina softball dropped a 3-2 game to Ogden in the Class 2A regional semifinals. City High softball lost a 5-3 battle to Waterloo West while Iowa City West fell to Marshalltown, 13-3, in the first round of regionals in Class 5A.

    Regina baseball fell to Cascade, 6-4, in the regional quarterfinals in 2A.

    Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athletes of the Week for July 8-14. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winners. Voting closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

    Players are listed in alphabetical order by last name :

    Girls

    Kendall Jensen, Sr., Solon

    Kendall Jensen delivered a versatile performance during Solon's 11-1 win over West Liberty during the second round of regional action on July 13.

    Jensen played a complete game, tallying six strikeouts and limiting the Comets to five hits and a run. She went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while at-bat.

    Reese Litton, Jr, Regina Catholic

    Reese Litton stepped up big during Regina's 12-0 shutout over Woodward-Granger in the first round of Class 2A regional play on July 10.

    Litton went 3-for-3 with five RBIs, two runs and a homer.

    Addie Miller, Jr., Solon

    Addie Miller was an offensive machine during Solon's 8-2 win over Vinton-Shellsburg during the start of Class 3A regional competition on July 11.

    Miller went 2-for-3, launching two homers with five RBIs and two runs.

    Mischa Reiners, Sr., Iowa City Liberty

    Mischa Reiners was a key piece in Liberty's 15-3 win over Davenport North in the first round of regionals on July 13.

    Reiners went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, three doubles, a triple and two runs.

    Cecilia Sterba, Soph., Iowa City West

    Despite a 13-3 loss to Marshalltown in the opening round of regionals, Cecilia Sterba of Iowa City West softball chipped in some hits at the plate.

    Sterba went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. She also homered and drove in a run.

    Boys

    Kyle Henkenius, Fresh., Iowa City West

    Kyle Henkenius was a playmaker during Iowa City West's 6-2 win over Clear Creek Amana on July 8.

    Henkenius went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Through four innings, he notched a strikeout and limited CCA to two runs.

    Kaden Phan, Jr., Clear Creek Amana

    Kaden Phan pitched a shutout during CCA's 3-0 win over Williamsburg during the opening round of regional competition on July 12.

    Phan tallied nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits to the Raiders. On the opposite side of the diamond, he went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

    Jaxton Schroeder, Jr., Iowa City High

    Jaxton Schroeder had a good day at the plate during City High's 9-0 win over Clinton in the first round of regional competition on July 12.

    Schroeder went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.

    Mason Waterbury, Jr., Iowa City Liberty

    Mason Waterbury was a strikeout machine during Liberty's 2-0 win over Waterloo West in the first round of regionals on July 12.

    Waterbury pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and limiting Iowa City West to three hits.

    Brett White, Sr., Solon

    Brett White needed just one hit to make his presence felt during Solon's 14-0 shutout win over Vinton-Shellsburg in the opening round of regional action on July 12.

    White went 1-for-1 with three RBIs, a homer and a walk.
