The Kansas City Chiefs have finally made a move to fill out their 90-man offseason roster.

The Chiefs have had an open roster space since they released DT Isaiah Buggs in late June. There were several different ways that they could have filled that roster space, including adding some veteran free agents to the mix . Instead, the Chiefs chose to add youth to a position group that struggled a season ago.

As first reported by Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick, the Chiefs have signed Slippery Rock WR Kyle Sheets to the 90-man offseason roster. This brings the roster up to 91 players because the team has an international player exemption for Jason 'Chu' Godrick. Sheets will wear jersey No. 29 at practice per Derrick.

Sheets was a Division II standout at Slippery Rock

Listed at a hair under 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds, Sheets boasts a great combination of size and speed. He tested quite well during the pre-draft process, running a 4.5 40-yard dash (1.53 10-yard split) with a 37-inch vertical jump, a 122-inch broad jump, 18 repetitions of 225 on the bench press, a 4.27s shuttle run, and a 7.03s three-cone.

In his final season with Slippery Rock, Sheets caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns. That included an eye-popping 12-catch, 210-yard, and three-touchdown game against Millersville. He earned First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors because of his tremendous performance.

Sheets signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL draft. He was waived by the Saints following their mandatory minicamp last month.

How does Sheets fit with the Chiefs?

Right now, Sheets is nothing more than the 91st man on the roster. He can prove to be more than that during training camp, but he has a long road ahead of him. Brett Veach continues to churn the bottom of the roster at the wide receiver position in hopes of raising the floor for that group, which is what he should be doing after the 2023 NFL season.

Sheets brings size to the receiver room, whereas the group has a lot of smaller and shifter players on the roster. He'll fit in more with the likes of Justyn Ross, Justin Watson, and Rashee Rice than say Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore, and Nikko Remigio. That's not to say that he's slow, but he just brings a different skill set to the table.

The timing of this is interesting being that Andy Reid just mentioned at the open of training camp that the Chiefs have yet to be informed by the league of any suspension for Rice. He's expected to receive a suspension at some point for his involvement in a Dallas-area car crash this offseason .
