SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A northwest Iowa man who was accused of kidnapping a child has pleaded guilty and been sentenced on lesser charges.

Karson Soumwei, 41, pleaded guilty to false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor, on August 14. He was originally charged with third-degree kidnapping, a class C felony.

On Monday, Soumwei was sentenced to 90 days in the Pocahontas County Jail. All but two of these days are suspended and he is being given credit for time that he has already served in jail. Additionally, Soumwei will be on probation for one year and is ordered to pay a $430 fine, and a 15% criminal surcharge.

Back in April, the child involved in the case had been reported missing after being taken from a front lawn on Nelson Street in Laurens, Iowa. The child was able to be located later, but police learned that the child had been taken by Sumwei. Sumwei said he had taken the child “because he felt bad for him.”
