The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office is investigating after police officers fatally shot a man in Kensington on Monday night following an hours-long standoff after an officer followed up on a mental health call, authorities say.

The Kensington officer who was following up on the call from the previous night midday Monday received information that a man in the residence on Olivia Lane was “criminally threatening” another occupant, according to a statement from the AG’s Office. Officers from the Seacoast Emergency Response Team and Strafford County Regional Tactical Operations Unit then responded and the standoff began.

Around 3:45 p.m., a shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents, according to an earlier statement.

“Shortly after 10:30 p.m., during an ensuing encounter with the armed male, six police officers discharged their firearms and one officer discharged a less-lethal munition,” the AG’s Office said. “Life saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the male suffered lethal injuries and died.”

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The identity of the deceased man will be released once an autopsy is completed, according to authorities, and the identity of the officers involved will not be disclosed until formal interviews take place.

The New Hampshire Department of Justice and the State Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
