Former Tennessee Vols QB Jarrett Guarantano was one of the more interesting and talked about players in recent program history.  Unfortunately, it was most often for the wrong reasons.

Guarantano, who joined the Vols as a member of the 2016 recruiting class , spent four seasons with the Tennessee Vols from 2017-2020. Over that time , he threw for 6174 yards with 38 touchdowns to 17 interceptions.

Regrettably, Guarantano never managed to succeed in Knoxville, ultimately transferring to Washington State for his final year of eligibility, where he saw limited action.

Fortunately, it appears Guarantano left Knoxville on good terms, as he put up a post on his Instagram account on Sunday showing love for Neyland Stadium and the Tennessee program.

Guarantano was a player who undoubtedly got fans talking, often putting them into two camps. There's absolutely no question that he inherited a bad situation coming into Knoxville.  His first year came in Butch Jones' final season, which everyone in Big Orange country knows how that went.

Jeremy Pruitt was hired to replace Jones, and everyone in Knoxville also knows the job he did during his three years in Knoxville.  The constant turnover at offensive coordinator and the new coaches and systems that Guarantano had to learn didn't help either. Add in an offensive line with protection problems over the years, and it was a perfect storm of challenges for a young QB.

However, those who pointed out one of Guarantano's shortcomings weren't wrong either, as he had trouble going beyond his first read at times, locking onto his primary target and forcing the football far too often.  But then again, that's something that perhaps better coaching could have helped cure.

Regardless of how fans felt about him then, they have to be happy with the state of the program now under Josh Heupel.  One can only wonder what Heupel's experience both playing quarterback and coaching them could have done for Guarantano if their paths had crossed in Knoxville.

Still, Vol fans have to love to see that there's at least nothing but love for Guarantano towards the school he spent the vast majority of his career playing for.
