    GWC Monument teaches about Carver's struggle for education

    DIAMOND, Mo. (KOAM) - The George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond is helping teach people about its namesakes struggle to get an education.

    The site hosted a program this weekend detailing the challenges Carver faced in the pursuit of an education following the Civil War.

    Attendees could learn more about the influential teachers in Carver's life, as well as the various schools he attended and taught at.

    The program presenter says it's important to understand and to know this part of his life story.

    “It's a part of his story that's very important and sometimes I think we take for granted how easy it is today to get an education. But it's a part of the story, a part of his story," says Valerie Baldwin, park guide. "A huge part of his story that shaped him and also led him on his journey.”

    The next program scheduled at the George Washington Carver National Monument is called 'Art in the Park' . It will be held Saturday, April 27th.

    It will showcase the artwork of Carver and artists will paint live throughout the day.
