Honoring Civil War Veteran Isaac Daniel at the nearly forgotten Short Creek Cemetery

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. (KOAM) - The Jasper County Preservation Society recently located a Civil War Veterans gravesite during clean up at Short Creek Cemetery in the Galena Township, located in the western part of Jasper County.

Private Isaac Daniel was a Civil War Veteran. His family had researched their genealogy knowing he was buried in Jasper County but it was unknown where. The JCCPS began working at Short Creek clearing brush unbeknownst to the family searching for Daniel. Riki Smith shared on social media of their work one day and a family member said, I think that’s my relative!

That brought us to Friday evening as a special service recognized the long-lost gravesite of the Civil War Veteran.

"Join us to honor Civil War Veteran Isaac Daniel. His family has been looking for his burial ground for generations. Through Jasper County Cemetery Preservation's clean up efforts, the headstone was recently uncovered. The descendants will visit the cemetery for the first time and Joplin's Civil Air Patrol help perform ceremonies."
