Tensions ran high at a Fort Worth ISD school board meeting Tuesday night as frustrated parents voiced their concerns about the district’s academic performance. A letter signed by dozens of residents was presented to the board, urging improvements in classroom instruction and stronger intervention strategies for struggling students.

Among the vocal critics was Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, who took the microphone to express her dissatisfaction with the district's ranking compared to other Texas school districts. Despite her criticism, Parker pledged her support to the school board and Superintendent Angelica Ramsey as they work to implement necessary changes.

The school board also voted on Tuesday to consolidate two schools, closing their last sixth-grade campus. The district said it's a cost-cutting move as it deals with declining enrollment. Fort Worth ISD will merge McLean Sixth Grade Center with McLean Middle School, and put those sixth, seventh, and eighth graders together.

District officials said they see it as a plus for students with more opportunities for activities. Parents are divided. Some said it would have a negative impact on their kids as they're transitioning out of elementary school.
