High school students get hands-on experience at construction camp

    2024-05-26

SPOKANE, Wash. - Local high school students rolled up their sleeves and learned the art of carpentry in the "Frame your Future" annual construction camp.

Students considering a future in the trades can experience the sawdust under their nails, and for many,  touch a power tool for the first time.

Discovering 'what's next' is a challenge for most teenagers. But high school senior Dakota White said being a part of an event like this benefits his future.

"It's like when you're on your own, you're like, you don't know what to do. But here it's like people that walk you, walking you through what to do. And, it's really nice," said Dakota.

With a guiding hand, Dakota built his first shed alongside mentors with years of experience.

"I think it's very important for the current tradesmen to be able to educate and teach the up and coming tradesmen and really teach them the job for what it's really about," said Ryan Edens, a tradesmen helping the camp.

Students also appreciate the hands-on experience of learning the trades and getting to decide whether or not this is the path they want to pursue.
