CSPD: Gang investigation leads to arrest, guns and “Switches” found

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said an investigation into a Colorado Springs gang led to the arrest of a member who was allegedly in possession of an aftermarket device that makes a handgun capable of automatic fire.

CSPD said in January 2024, detectives with the Strategic Investigations Unit began an investigation into a Colorado Springs gang that CSPD said was responsible for a number of crimes including; weapon possession, robberies, assaults, shootings, and drive-by shootings.

During the investigation, it was determined that one of the members, identified as 18-year-old Josiah Olivas, had a handgun with a “Switch” device attached to it.

CSPD said a “Switch” is an aftermarket device attached to the rear slide of a handgun making it capable of automatic fire at the press of a button. The addition of a “Switch” classifies the handgun as a “Dangerous or Illegal Weapon” per Colorado law.

Detectives were able to obtain a search warrant for Olivas’ home near East Fountain Boulevard and Chelton Road and executed it on Aug. 15. Olivas was detained, and two handguns with “Switches” were found, along with other firearms.

CSPD said detectives also found six extended handgun magazines and a 100-drum-style magazine designed for an AR-15 rifle.

Olivas was booked into the CJC and is facing charges of Possessing a Dangerous or Illegal Weapon and Large Capacity Magazines Prohibited.
