Senior Aidan Berg tossed a one-hitter on only 66 pitches as fourth-seeded Lakeside Lutheran ousted 13th-seeded Luther Prep 3-0 in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal baseball game at LLHS on Thursday, May 23.

Micah Westendorf led off the game with a fly ball single to center for the Phoenix (6-15). He was thrown out by catcher Billy Gibson trying to steal second for the inning's second out.

Berg retired 11 straight hitters until Nathan Vance reached on a no-out infield error in the fifth. Vance was then picked off first to end the inning. Berg retired eight straight hitters to seal it and walked none for the game, facing the minimum 21 batters.

"Aidan was super efficient, mixing his pitches, getting some soft contact and was just in control all day long," Lakeside baseball coach Jake Ziel said. "It's fun to watch when he gets rolling like he was today."

Lakeside (19-5) plated two runs in the third, which saw Haydenn Schoenherr lead off the inning by drawing a walk. Gibson came up next, lining a double to left to open the scoring. Gibson's courtesy runner Owen Marty came around on Tyler Chopp's sacrifice fly.

"Billy, our freshman catcher, has really had a fantastic season. He has handled our pitchers well, is throwing the ball with confidence and is now driving the ball at the plate. He has been a vital part to our success."

Cooper Brakmanis singled home a two-out run in the Warriors' fourth.

Owen Proctor and Silas Winkel combined to hold the Warriors to just four hits. Proctor started, allowing two earned on one hit in 2 2/3 innings in the loss. Winkel allowed a run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings.

"It was a good clean game played by both sides," Ziel said. "We knew Prep would be ready to play and ready to give us a good game and they did.

"We have earned ourselves seven more innings to compete and we are excited to advance and make the most of the opportunity."

The Warriors host a regional semifinal on Tuesday against 12th-seeded Monroe, which upset fifth-seeded McFarland 7-2.
