Charges: Man fatally shot Amazon coworker in fight over gun attachment

A Faribault man is facing 2nd-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting a coworker outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Lakeville, following an argument over a gun attachment.

Mohamed Hared, 24, is accused of killing Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, 22, outside the facility at 9800 217th St. W. Saturday evening.

A complaint filed Tuesday and said that Hared called the police, claiming he had shot his coworker accidentally when he accused him of stealing a flashlight attachment for his gun.

Another witness was present during the fight and ran inside to call the police.

The witness had offered Hared a ride to work that day after his car "broke down." When all three returned to the car around 1 a.m., Hared accused Cariif and the witness of stealing the attachment that was missing from his gun. Hared confirmed to police that he had a permit for the gun.

Both denied taking it and agreed to go back out during their next break to look for it. They went outside around 4 a.m. to search again but could not find it.

Hared allegedly told both of them, "You guys took my flashlight. I want my flashlight back. No one's going home today," before getting into a physical fight with Cariif. After breaking up the initial fight, the witness says they got into another fight where Hamed pulled out a gun.

As Cariif went to try and grab the gun, Hared shot him. He claims that he had no choice but to defend himself and that Cariif "advanced" at him. Hared claims the second shot was due to Cariif trying to pry the gun away from Hared.

Detectives looked at the surveillance video and confirmed that Hared had started the fight, that there were two separate altercations, and that he "had the ability to retreat" but instead chose to continue fighting.

An autopsy confirmed that Cariif suffered from blunt force trauma to his jaw and abrasions on his hand due to the fistfight, and the gunshot wound was found to have struck his heart, lung, and aorta.

Hared was arrested and booked on Saturday without issue. He had his first court appearance today at 10 a.m. and is expected back on July 15 at 9 a.m. His bond is set at $2 million, and he is still in the Dakota County Jail.

“It’s so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter," said Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena. "Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work. My condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Cariif."
