WATERTOWN TWP. — Memorial Day events planned in the township have been canceled in the wake of a crash that killed two people and injured 14 others Saturday evening.

Watertown Township Clerk Carolyn Brokob shared a Facebook post Tuesday stating that a planned parade on Saturday, as well as a memorial ceremony, bike decorating event, acknowledgement of the citizen of the year and hot dog lunch would not take place this year.

"Out of respect to the family of the tragic event that occurred on May 18th on Wacousta Road, the Watertown Memorial Day events scheduled for May 25, 2024 have been CANCELED this year," Brokob wrote in the post.

"Grand Ledge is holding a Memorial Day parade and cemetery ceremony on Saturday 5-25-24 at 11AM if you are interested in attending an event to honor and remember those that have died in service to our country," she added.

Saturday, a suspected drunken driver struck 16 members of an extended family on South Wacousta Road, killing two men . All 14 other family members were injured, including one who remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Ashley Monroe, 35, of Perrinton, who police said did not stop at the scene of the crash, was later arrested and has been charged with 11 felonies in connection with the crash . She was being held on a $1 million cash bond.
