Wyoming Football: 2024 Cowboys Season Preview and Prediction
By Athlon Sports,
Craig Bohl left the program in good shape when he announced his retirement after 10 years at the helm. Not counting the pandemic season, Wyoming has made a bowl in six of its last seven years, and there are plenty of veterans to keep things on track. The wide receivers will need to step up, and quarterback Evan Svoboda has to fulfill expectations for Wyoming to be in the mix near the top of the league.
Evan Svoboda will step in as the new quarterback wearing the No. 17 jersey Josh Allen made famous. Svoboda has the build of Allen, checking in at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds. He started vs. Texas last year and directed the game-winning drive in the Arizona Bowl win over Toledo.
With Svoboda, Wyoming will likely be closer to a 50/50 run/pass ratio than last season, when the Cowboys ran it 61 percent of the time. That said, all-league running back Harrison Waylee returns after running for 947 yards, and there is a deep group behind him in Sam Scott, North Carolina transfer DJ Jones and Dawaiian McNeely, who is returning from injury.
Svoboda’s main pass-catchers will be Alex Brown and Will Pelissier, two players who will be expected to up their production in 2024. Tight end John Michael Gyllenborg could be among the Mountain West Conference’s best now that he is no longer sharing the position.
The offensive line has four starters back, with one tackle spot still to likely be determined in the fall. Guard Jack Walsh and center Nofoafia Tulafono are all-league candidates.
Quarterback Evan Svoboda is expected to lead the Wyoming offense in 2024 after throwing for 200 yards as a backup last season.

Previewing Wyoming’s Defense for 2024
A defense that was third in the Mountain West in total yardage welcomes back seven starters for new coordinator Aaron Bohl. The defensive line is deep and experienced and will be able to rotate players and stay fresh. Defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole is the headliner with 60 tackles last season, earning him second-team All-MWC honors. Defensive end DeVonne Harris is a player to watch, and Sebastian Harsh had nine tackles for a loss from the other defensive end spot.
Shae Suiaunoa is moving from weakside linebacker to middle linebacker and is the team’s leading returning tackler. The returning safety tandem of Wyett Ekeler (younger brother of Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler) and Isaac White is one of the best in the league.
Defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole returns after a second-team All-MWC campaign in 2023.

Previewing Wyoming’s Specialists for 2024
Kicker John Hoyland is back for his fifth season. Two years ago, he was a Lou Groza finalist after nailing 22-of-25 attempts, including four 50-yarders, but last season he dipped a bit, connecting on 13-of-20. The punting position was still in flux in the spring, with Keelan Anderson and Erik Sandvik taking reps.
