(Lincoln, NE) – Local Southwest Iowa Native, Brett Sears, has been named a second-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators.

This honor for the Westphalia, Iowa native marks the first for a Husker baseball player since 2016 and he is also the first Husker to be named an All-American and Academic All-American in the same season since Aaron Mardsen back in 2003. Sears was one of the top pitchers in the nation and was one of the best students in the classroom with a 3.65 GPA with a degree in child, youth, and family studies in May.

Alongside his academic career, Sears was named a unanimous second-team All-American while also being named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and was named National Pitcher of the Year. He was also named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree while earning a 9-1 record on the mound and a 2.16 overall ERA.

Sears finished with a 0.88 WHIP, ranked fifth in ERA at 2.16, sat at 19th in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 5.32, and ranked 20th in hits allowed per nine innings.
