How DC-area shoppers can save some money in August
Virginia will hold a three-day sales tax holiday and Maryland will hold a similar one for a week, as local shoppers load their carts with back-to-school items. This year’s Virginia’s sales tax holiday, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 4, comes after state lawmakers forgot to renew the sales tax holiday during budget negotiations back in March 2023. That legislation expired so it could not be offered in August, as in previous years, when people are usually shopping for back-to-school items. But it was eventually held last October.
Competition Times for Alexandria, Virginia’s Olympians
ALEXANDRIA, VA – T.C. Williams High School (now Alexandria City High School) alum Noah Lyles will compete in the 100-meter preliminaries on August 3 at 5:45 am ET on NBC, Peacock, and NBCOlympics.com. The semifinals will take place on Sunday, August 4, at 2 pm ET on the same networks, and the 100-meter finals will take place at 3:50 on August 4. He will compete in the 200-meter preliminaries on Monday, August 5, at 1:55 pm, the semis on Wednesday, August 7, at 2:02 pm, and the final on Thursday, August 8, at 2:30 p.m. on the same networks.
Arlington-Alexandria residents become Va. 'folklife apprentices'
A team from Arlington and Alexandria has been named one of six from across Virginia selected by the Virginia Folklife Program as folklife apprentices for the coming year. Hayrunisa Yenilmes and Amar Kilich (Alexandria) and Ajinur Setiwaldi and Subhinur Elemin (Arlington) were selected for their efforts studying and performing Uyghur traditional music.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian that occurred on Saturday, July 27 in Silver Spring. According to police, “At approximately 8:59 p.m., Montgomery County Department of Police 3rd District officers and Fire Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of Langley Drive and University Blvd where an adult male had been struck by a vehicle while crossing University Blvd. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
