Traffic Debate Takes Wrong Turn in Newport
Discussion was heated on July 10 as the Newport City Council approved a resolution instructing city staff to provide recommendations for traffic-calming measures. Councilor David Carlin, the resolution’s author, said he has received frequent complaints of traffic laws being disregarded, such as stop signs, yield signs, crosswalks in school zones and more, and that violations were often by motor vehicles displaying out-of-state plates.

Newport Considers Citywide Short-Term Rental Ban
Newport is looking to expand a ban citywide on new, non-owner occupied short-term rentals under 30 days. The city previously banned new, non-owner-occupied short-term rentals in residential zones in 2022. On July 10, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution instructing city administration to present ordinance changes and administrative policies to prohibit such uses in any zone in the city by July 24. If approved, any potential ban would exempt properties “currently under contract to be purchased or permitted” for short- term rental use, according to the resolution.
Westport Animal Controls says 3 cases of rabies found in town
WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) — Westport Animal Control said three cases of rabies were confirmed in the town during the month of June. The department advised all pet owners to check that their animals’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date and to also make sure they are licensed with the town.
