High Levels of E. Coli Force Temporary Closure of Belle Isle Park’s Swimming Areas
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the temporary closure of Belle Isle Park’s swimming areas following the detection of high levels of bacteria in the Detroit River. Samples taken on July 10 revealed elevated amounts of E. coli, a bacteria harmful if ingested or exposed through skin contact. The tests found an average of 920 E. coli per 100 milliliters, more than triple the allowed level.
Possible derecho starts in Iowa, leaving trail of storm damage into Michigan
(Radio Iowa) – A powerful series of storms swept over Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan late Monday afternoon and night, spinning off at least one tornado in Iowa and knocking out the power to nearly a half-million Midwesterners. The Weather Channel and several news outlets are calling the storms a derecho, but meteorologist Brooke Hagenhof, at the National Weather Service office in Johnston, says still it’s too early to say that. “The official determination for a derecho is made by the Storm Prediction Center, their national center down in Norman, Oklahoma,” Hagenhoff says. “Derechos have a very strict definition as far as how long they are and how wide that swath of wind damage is, so they will be going through the data today and determining whether this fits that description.”

Severe storms bring more heavy rain to West Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Severe thunderstorms racing across West Michigan late Monday night and early Tuesday morning created vivid lightning and dropped more heavy rain on already saturated ground. The storms first moved onto the Lake Michigan shoreline around 11 p.m. Monday and moved steadily eastward until clearing the area by 3 a.m. Tuesday. Doppler radar estimated rainfall showed the heaviest precipitation fell in an east to west stripe that roughly followed I-94 where between 2.5" and 4.0" of rain may have fallen.
