We hope to see you at the Riverfest Block Party. People of all ages are invited to this fun event that will be held on Thursday, July 11. Stop by the south side of the community center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a hotdog, chips, dessert and soda. It’s all free. Part of the senior center’s responsibility for the Block Party is to provide desserts and we need a lot. Please contact the center if you can bake bars or cookies for the Block Party, 763-295-2000.

The senior center will be running the Riverfest bingo event on Sunday, July 14 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The bingo tent will be located at the far end of the Monticello Community Center west parking lot and people of all ages are welcome to play. The cost is 25 cents per card per game or 50 cents for three cards per game. If there is one winner, the prize is $5, two winners will take home $2.50 each and, if there’s three winners, a deck of cards will be cut to determine who gets the $5 prize. We hope to see you at Riverfest bingo.

We also hope to see you at the next presentation historian David Jones will give at the center, called “Prohibition: A Grand Misadventure.” In 1920, the United States entered a period during which the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxicating liquors was banned. As it turned out, the U.S. also entered a period of lawlessness and corruption. Rather than curing the ills of society, Prohibition is remembered for creating some of the worst possible results. Come to the center on Wednesday, July 17 at 10 a.m., when Jones will delve into the story. Please sign up if you plan to attend, 763-295-2000.

You are also asked to sign up in advance if you plan to come to the next “Ask a Master Gardener” event that will take place on Friday, July 19 at 12:30 p.m. A Master Gardener from the University of Minnesota Extension Volunteer program will be available to provide tips and resources to answer your gardening questions. This month, we will discuss why pollinator gardens are so important.

If you are a caregiver, it is important to get the support you need and one way to do that is by attending the monthly Memory Café get-togethers. The Memory Café is a safe and comfortable place where caregivers and their loved ones with memory loss can participate together. The café experience is free, and all supplies are provided for you. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at our center from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Caregivers have the option to attend a concurrent caregiver support group. Please sign up if you plan to attend.

You do not have to sign up in advance to attend the senior center’s Caregiver Support Group. If you are a caregiver, please come to this meeting on Thursday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. If you’re helping an older adult in your life, you are a caregiver. The group is facilitated by licensed social worker Becky Allard. You can also make an appointment to meet individually with Allard. She can help you get the support you need to sustain your ability to provide help and maintain your own life balance. Allard’s phone number is 612-804-0968.

The senior center Book Club will get together on Wednesday, July 10 at 9:30 a.m. They will be discussing the book, “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. You can also pick up the next book the group will be reading. You do not have to sign up in advance to attend. If you like to read, check out the Book Club.

If you like to crochet, sew, scrapbook, embroider, weave, etc. come to the senior center Handiwork Group on Tuesday, July 9. The group will meet that day at 12:30 p.m. There is no instructor, just people with projects getting together. You can give me a call for more information.

You can get your blood pressure checked at the senior center on Tuesday, July 9 anytime from 11 a.m. to noon. Nurse Ali from St. Benedict’s Center Senior Community will be on hand to provide this valuable service. You do not have to sign up in advance.

You are asked to sign up in advance if you want to come to the knitting class on Monday, July 15. There is no charge to attend and knitting needles and yarn will be provided.

Ten June Trivia Contest sheets that were turned in had all the answers correct and they were from Jeanne Christy, Tim Erickson, Robin Feller, Alice Kantor, Paul and Dianne Klein, Barb Liefert, Tom Liefert, Sharon Long, Bernice Nathe and Arlen Pocklington. Kantor’s name was randomly drawn as the winner of the $10 prize. Stop by the center and pick up a July Trivia Contest sheet if you enjoy a challenge.

Bernice Nathe was the winner of last week’s cribbage tournament. Bill Lansing came in second place and Duane Georges third. The last euchre tournament winner was Marv Kuechle, with Tom Wright coming in second place, and Ed Lewis third.

Please stop in the senior center for a cup of coffee and a friendly smile.
