Conference Mediations for Charles City, Decorah, Waverly-Shell Rock Wednesday (07.17)
The futures of what will eventually be three former Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) schools could be decided by state officials starting Wednesday (07.17). Charles City, Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock (WSR) are all headed for mediation in separate efforts to join new conferences starting with the 2025-26 school year. Moves precipitated with the NEIC set to dissolve after the 2024-25 school year after current league members New Hampton, Cresco-Crestwood, and Waukon have opted to join the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) starting July 1, 2025.

UNI volleyball honored with AVCA Team Academic Award for 2023-24
LEXINGTON, Ky. --- For a 13th consecutive year, the UNI volleyball team has been named a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Team Academic Award, presented by INTENT. Honorees for the 2023-24 season were announced by the AVCA on Wednesday afternoon with the Panthers also earning special honor roll distinction for posting a team grade-point average (GPA) in the top 20% among NCAA Division I programs.

BELLE PLAINE, Iowa (KCRG) - Inside Drahos Shoe Store, on Main Street in Belle Plaine, lives generations of knowledge. “My grandfather was a Shoemaker in Bohemia. In 1904, he immigrated to the US. He was 17 years old. He had $22.60 in his pocket,” says Dan Drahos, the current owner and operator of Drahos Shoe Store. Don’s grandfather used those talents to start up a shoe repair business in Belle Plaine during the Great Depression, and eventually passed the business along to his son.

Minnesota Man to Plead Guilty to Charges from High-Speed Pursuit in Northeast Iowa
A Minnesota man will plead guilty to charges connected to leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase earlier this spring that started near New Hampton. On April 12th, a Chickasaw County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop on a car driven by 24-year-old Quaddre White of St. Paul was clocked at 98 mph in a 55 mph zone on Highway 63. White initially pulled over, but then sped away.
