GOTTA SEE IT: Ovechkin Makes NHL History Again With 30th Of Season vs. Red Wings; Gartner Tells Capitals Captain He'll Pass Gretzky

Alex Ovechkin can't be stopped, and now, no one in NHL history has more 30-goal seasons than the Washington Capitals captain.

With roughly seven seconds remaining in the second period of Tuesday's contest with the Detroit Red Wings, Ovechkin snapped a quick shot past Alex Lyon on an odd-man break to make it a 2-0 game with his 30th goal of the year and fourth goal in as many games.

He now has 18 seasons with at least 30 goals, moving him past former Capitals star Mike Gartner for the most 30-goal campaigns in NHL history.

Gartner had a video ready for Ovechkin on the Capitals' social media, offering congrats and hinting that the biggest record is still yet to come.

"Hey Ovi, it's Mike Gartner. I just wanted to congratulate you on 18 30-plus goal seasons. I know we shared the record for a very brief time and I'm pretty appreciative of that, but now you have it all by yourself," Ovechkin said. "There are many records that you have in the NHL and there's one big one that you're still gonna get. Good luck, all the best."

Ovechkin is also the sixth player in NHL history to record at least 30 goals at age 38 or older.

The Russian has been on a tear in the second half of the season, putting up 22 goals in 32 games after managing just eight through the first 43 games of the 2023-24 campaign.

Ovechkin now sits at 852 career goals, putting him 43 away from passing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history.
