The Washington Capitals saw prospect Ryan Leonard take a seat on Thursday, as he was a healthy scratch for the United States' preliminary game against France.

Leonard, who skated just 4:48 minutes in a 5-4 overtime loss to Slovakia earlier in the week, watched from above as Boston College teammate Will Smith suited up as the 13th forward, skating just 5:53 minutes in a 5-0 win for Team USA.

Through three games at Worlds so far, Leonard has one assist. He could get the chance to draw back in on Friday when the United States faces Poland in its fifth game of the preliminary round ahead of the elimination games.

Washington is keeping a close eye on Leonard this summer following his impressive freshman year at B.C. that saw him put up 31 goals and 29 assists for 60 points in 41 games.

The 19-year-old, who was taken eighth overall in last year's NHL draft, informed the Capitals that he wants to return to Boston College for his sophomore season after the Eagles fell to Denver in the NCAA Championship Game.

While Leonard returning to college appears to be the plan in place, as general manager Brian MacLellan voiced support for the young forward returning for another key year of development, the summer could have an impact on whether or not he chooses to go pro.

Per The Daily Faceoff , if Smith decides to go pro and sign with the San Jose Sharks, it could lead to a "domino effect" that would perhaps put Leonard in a spot to sign with D.C. sooner rather than later.

Still, Leonard has stressed earlier in the year that he is not too concerned with the future and that he wants to enjoy the college experience.
