POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Potter County Sheriff’s Office warned community members of a scam reported on Tuesday in which a scammer may falsely claim a community member may have an outstanding warrant for not providing a DNA sample.

According to the sheriff’s office, a community member reported that they received a call that they had an outstanding warrant for not providing a DNA sample and that they owed $2,000 to avoid arrest. The scammer allegedly claimed to be Lieutenant Langwell with the Potter County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials warned community members that the reported calls and those similar are scams, as the sheriff’s office “will never contact anyone to make them pay for getting out of a warrant or ever ask a member of this community for cash.”

Further, officials advised that community members who are unsure about a call they receive should hang up and contact the allegedly connected agency directly with the number provided on the agency’s official website. For example, in the case of the Potter County Sheriff’s Office, community members should call 806-379-2900.
