(FOX40.COM) — A skunk, which was recently found outside of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife facility in Sacramento County , has tested positive for rabies, according to officials.

The skunk was found “showing neurological signs” near the American River Parkway on June 19, officials added. The animal was taken to the CDFW facility on Nimbus Road in Rancho Cordova by CDFW staff and was “humanely euthanized” before it was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory for a necropsy .

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the skunk tested positive for rabies.

“In California, rabies is identified in about 200 animals every year, most often in wildlife like bats and skunks,” officials said. “Domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and horses can also get rabies, but this is not as common due to legal requirements for rabies vaccination.”

The American River Parkway is a popular destination for outdoor recreational activities, so Sacramento County reminds residents to report any animals suspected to have rabies.

Avoiding contact with wild animals, reporting unusual behavior in animals like stumbling, seizures, or aggressiveness, and immediately washing any animal bites with soap and water while seeking medical attention are all recommended ways to minimize rabies exposure.

    What is rabies?

Rabies is a severe nervous system infection caused by a virus that is most often transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.

The Centers for Disease Control said the disease can lead to severe brain disease and even death if medical care is not received before symptoms begin to appear.

Each year, around 60,000 Americans are exposed to rabies and require medical care.

One of the best ways to prevent rabies is by ensuring all pets are vaccinated and staying up-to-date with their rabies vaccine.
