Shannen Doherty , who famously starred in ‘ Beverly Hills 90210 ’ as Brenda Walsh and ‘ Charmed ’ as good witch Prue Halliwell, has sadly passed away at 53 after a long battle with breast cancer.
The actress, who also starred in movies like ‘ Heathers ,’ ‘ Mallrats ,’ and ‘ Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ,’ was first diagnosed with the disease in 2015. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE , Doherty’s longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed the news on Sunday (July 14).
Sloane said, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
PEOPLE reported that after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, she later revealed in April 2017 that she had gone into remission; however, by 2019, the cancer had returned. The following year, Shannen Doherty announced that the disease had progressed, revealing she now had metastatic Stage 4 Breast Cancer.
In June 2023, the actress shared on Instagram that the cancer had continued to spread, now invading her brain, and that she had undergone surgery five months earlier to remove a brain tumor, which she named Bob.
In August 2023, Shannen Doherty updated PEOPLE about her tumor named Bob, stating, “He had to get removed and dissected to see his pathology. It was definitely one of the scariest things I’ve ever been through in my entire life.”
Despite dealing with the unpredictable disease, Doherty remained positive and continued to work and live life with the disease. She said, “People just assume that it means you can’t walk, you can’t eat, you can’t work. They put you out to pasture at a very early age — ‘You’re done, you’re retired,’ and we’re not. We’re vibrant, and we have such a different outlook on life. We are people who want to work and embrace life and keep moving forward.”
In November 2023, Shannen Doherty spoke openly with PEOPLE again about how the disease had progressed and spread to her bones, leaving her to tell the publication that she didn’t “want to die.” She said, “I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better. I’m just not — I’m not done.”
