BENTON CO., Wash. -- The Benton County Sheriff's Office said a 16-year-old boy died after being hit by a train Sunday morning.

According to BCSO, deputies responded to the call for help around 9:30 a.m. in the area of Piert and Riek Road.

Officials said two witnesses told deputies the 16-year-old had been fishing with them at the Lagoon since 6:30 a.m.

According to officials, witnesses said the 16-year-old fishing rod had stopped working so he started walking around. At some point, he had sat down on the train tracks behind the lagoon.

Deputies said the two friends heard the train coming and began to yell at the 16-year-old. They said the 16-year-old was hunched over with his head down and looked like he could've been asleep.

Officials said due to a steep embankment, the two friends were not able to get to the teenager before the train hit him.

"The incident is still being investigated but at this point it appears to be a tragic accident." BCSO said.
