‘Why’d you shoot?’ Body camera video shows moment Douglas Co. deputy shoots man in upside down car

Newly released body camera video shows the moment a man was shot by a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy in November 2023 .

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 36-year-old Cameron Hunt led deputies on a chase down I-20 after they tried pulling him over for speeding.

Hunt lost control of his SUV as he exited off the interstate, flipping the SUV on its roof.

Body camera video from two deputies, which was shared with Channel 2 Action News by Hunt’s attorneys, shows them approach the car and command Hunt to show them his hands.

He sticks his hands out of the door, but one of the deputies fires a single shot.

“Why’d you shoot?” the other deputy can be heard asking.

“He went like this,” the deputy who fired a shot says while making a motion with his hands.

Hunt is pulled out of the car and tells the deputies that he’s been hit.

He survived his injuries, but his attorney, Graham Schofield, told Channel 2′s Tom Jones he was unarmed and following deputies’ commands.

“When someone raises their hands like that, they’re showing you, ‘I submit. I’m not a violent threat. Don’t shoot me,’” Schofield said.

Deputies say Hunt was going 113 miles per hour on I-20 at Lee Road. After the crash, Hunt’s airbags went off and he was trapped.

Deputy Lawrence, a rookie, can be heard on the video explaining why he fired.

“He hands his hands up, right, and immediately he went back down like this and went like this and I shot,” he explained.

Schofield says the other deputy in the video is Lawrence’s superior and never fired a shot.

“Because the supervising officer knew deadly force was not warranted,” he said.

The Douglas County District Attorney presented the case to a grand jury, who chose not to indict Lawrence.

But Hunt’s mother says he should be facing charges.

“My heart breaks every time I see the video,” Brenda Dubone said. “That’s unfair. It’s not right.”

Hunt remains in jail on charges connected to this incident. His mother says he says still has the bullet in his shoulder.

The sheriff’s office says it has no comment, and it appears that Deputy Lawrence is still on the force.
