Another fox infected with rabies has been found in Bath.

The dead gray fox was found on a Maxwell Road property on Tuesday, according to the Bath Police Department.

The fox was sent to a lab, which confirmed rabies, making it the third gray fox infected with the disease in the past four weeks, Bath police said Friday.

A young gray fox was spotted about 6 a.m. on July 15 wandering around the Big Apple and walking into traffic on Route 1, with 911 callers reporting that the animal was acting sick.

Officers later found the fox near Cottage Street, where they determined it wasn’t “acting normally and was potentially rabid.” They captured the fox and euthanized it, Bath Police Chief Andrew Booth said last week.

That followed a case on June 28 involving an older fox in the same area.

“We suspect but have not confirmed that these two foxes are related,” Booth said last week.

These are the first confirmed rabies cases in Bath since January 2020, which also involved a fox.

Bath residents have been urged to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations and to report any sick-acting animals.
