An inmate in Pueblo has received additional felony charges after smuggling a large amount of fentanyl into the county jail, according to a Friday announcement.

Officials said 39-year-old Chad Edmunds was initially charged and booked into the Pueblo County Jail on two outstanding warrants when deputies received multiple tips Edmunds had ingested drugs to smuggle them into the facility prior to his arrest.

The day after his booking, deputies confronted Edmunds, who denied all accusations but agreed to a medical scan.

According to sheriff's office officials, Edmunds was brought to a nearby hospital on July 24, "where the scan was conducted and showed there were from 20 to 30 small, round items in his intestines."

Edmunds then admitted to smuggling drugs into the facility before being booked, the Friday announcement states.

After Edmunds "passed" the bag of pills, deputies discovered it had contained 37 pills of fentanyl.

According to the sheriff's office, Edmunds has received multiple additional felony charges including second-degree introduction of contraband, possession of contraband, unlawful distribution and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Officials said Edmunds remains in the Pueblo County Jail on a $65,000 bond.
