NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division will now check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse for drug and alcohol violations before taking action on commercial driver’s licenses.

    Story continues below

The federal clearinghouse holds information about CDL holders who are covered by the administration’s drug and alcohol program. The program helps identify drivers who are not allowed to drive a commercial vehicle and helps drivers get evaluation and treatment to be allowed to operate a commercial vehicle.

Anytime a violation is reported to the clearinghouse, the MVD is notified that driver has a prohibited status and their license is downgraded from a commercial license. If a driver completes the federal return process, the CDL is reinstated.
