NEWTON − A 96-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car late Thursday morning as she crossed Madison Street in the crosswalk, according to authorities.

Police said driver of the vehicle was a 25-year-old Newton resident. Police identified the victim as Marcos Travis, also of Newton.

The initial investigation indicates the driver made a left turn from Elm Street around 11 a.m. and struck the woman, who was in the crosswalk on Madison Street. Elm Street forms a "T" intersection with Madison Street.

The woman was taken to Newton Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

The investigation, assisted by the Crash Team from the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office and County Sheriff's Office, is continuing and no charges were immediately brought by police.

Sheriff Michael Strada said the Crash Team responds to most fatal accidents handled by municipal police within the county.
