Student hospitalized after she and friend slump over at Mexican bar while on vacation – as family recall ‘nightmare’

TWO students became mysteriously ill at a bar and one was hospitalized after their dream Mexican vacation turned into a horror story.

The families of friends Zara Hull and Kaylie Pitze, from Oklahoma , recalled the horror travel situation which left one side with thousands of dollars worth of medical bills.

Hull and Pitze, students at Oklahoma Christian University, had visited Cancun, Mexico , with their boyfriends.

Their perfect vacation was quickly turned on its head after the girls got a drink at a resort bar on Friday.

The friends ordered a glass of water but the girls quickly slumped over and Hull started to have some “jerking movements,” according to ABC affiliate KOCO-TV .

Pitze recalled that the girls were then taken back to their rooms in wheelchairs, according to CBS affiliate KWTV .

“We were out, couldn’t walk, couldn’t talk, couldn’t do anything,” she said.

Pitze explained that she had woken up in a poor state the next morning.

“It hurt to open my eyes, I was very nauseous, I couldn’t move,” she recalled.

She explained that the nightmare continued when she discovered Hull had been sent to a hospital overnight.

“I started having convulsions in my stomach, so they called 911,” Hull said.

The pair are back in the US but Hull has remained in the hospital as doctors try to figure out what mysteriously happened.

It is not yet known what could have caused the girls’ condition but their families have suspected their drinks were spiked with synthetic fentanyl, according to KWTV.

“We don’t have a lot of answers, we don’t know a lot, we don’t know what she was given in there hospital down there, we don’t know what she was given at the resort,” Hull’s mom Rilee Works said.

Her family have set up a GoFundMe page where they recalled their horror and how they wound up with thousands of dollars worth of bills.

The fundraiser said Hull was charged a $10,000 deposit at the hospital to start treatment.

“Over the next few hours her seizures continued,” the page said.

“A CT was done and showed no cause. She was placed in ICU.”

Her family also claimed that her boyfriend was charged $200 to stay in the hospital overnight.

Hull’s family and friends reached out to the US Embassy who reportedly told them to get her back home.

“The hospital has requested another $25,000 by Sunday morning to continue treatment or $5,000 to release her,” they wrote.

Her family added that they needed to pay another $26,000 deposit to get an air ambulance to take the student back to the US.

BACK HOME

Hull reached home on Sunday, August 4, and has been in hospital since.

Her family has shared updates on her improving health.

“She was also moved out of ICU!” the page said.

“For now she is spending time in the neurology unit while her body continues to detox from being over medicated in the Mexican hospital.”

“Again, we ask for everyone to continue to lift all of them in prayer as the healing process continues,” the family added.

The fundraiser has collected over $18,000 but it is still shy of its $40,000 target.

Hull’s boyfriends mother, Stephanie Snider, said the incident had caused major stress and anxiety for all involved.

“Something must be done to stop these things from happening. It’s every parent’s nightmare,” she said according to the MailOnline .
