Can you believe it’s been a year since Oklahoma Voice published its first free, nonpartisan news stories and commentary aimed at helping expand Oklahomans’ knowledge of the inner workings of government?

From uncovering the reason why students’ standardized test scores suddenly increased to examining  the intersection of state policy and Oklahoma’s Indigenous communities , our first year was filled with newsy stories that helped shine a light on important issues that might have otherwise gone uncovered.

Thanks to the hard work of our staff, contributors and columnists, the demand for Oklahoma Voice content has continued to grow. Our coverage, which is never behind a paywall, has been republished or mentioned thousands of times. In an effort to help train the next generation of state government reporters, we launched an internship program and selected a promising Oklahoma State University journalism student to work in our newsroom for the summer.

One of our founding reporters, Nuria Martinez-Keel, recently earned our newsrooms’ first award in a multi-state journalism competition for her in-depth reporting on the exodus of textbook publishers .

But no matter how many awards we win, how many times we’re republished or how many stories we write, we know that the people reading this note are in large part responsible for our success. You are among the first Oklahomans to support our mission and to believe in our product. You’re the ones who return week after week to our site, subscribe to our free newsletter and help provide some of our story ideas and thought-provoking columns.

I’ve got big dreams for Oklahoma Voice in the months and years to come, and it’s your donations that will help us continue to thrive.

As we celebrate our first birthday, we hope you’ll celebrate with us by making a donation to support our journalism.

I’m excited to see what our second year has in store for us, and I hope you are, too.
